Internet Ads and Marketing Reality

So, we are buying a new car.

Sweet....

Before we settled on a new BRZ, we went looking to see if we could find a lightly used one, especially in this color.

I had a yellow car as a youth, before a drunk driver destroyed it, and would very much liked to have another. It was not to be. We found one many states away, but it was sold before we were able to visit. So we will be adopting a bright, red, shiny new baby BRZ as soon as it arrives. :)

None of that matters for this post except since we looked for a used vehicle on line, we are now tortured with the on-line ads.

How can an effective marketing program have an algorithm that believes someone searching for a 0-3 year-old Japanese sports coupe is really searching for a 12+ year-old, full size American sedan? I could understand an Accord coupe, or a Lexus, or maybe a Nissan 370Z, but full-sized sedans? How does the internet make money? Their targeted ads always seem useless to me. Maybe I am just a person of mystery. :)
